Total Bilirubin Meter for Blood Sample Testing
The UMALZ027 total bilirubin meter is designed for quantitative determination of total bilirubin in blood using direct photometry. The compact benchtop system uses a small capillary sample and provides rapid bilirubin measurement for clinical laboratories, neonatal units and other healthcare settings requiring blood-based bilirubin testing.
The system requires approximately 40–45 μL of sample and uses a bi-chromatic photometer with 450 nm and 578 nm filters. A backlit LCD, built-in 58 mm thermal printer, RS232 interface and USB connection support routine result review and documentation.
Unlike a transcutaneous bilirubin meter, this system measures bilirubin from a prepared blood sample using a disposable capillary.
Key Features
Direct Photometry Measurement
The analyzer uses direct photometry for quantitative determination of total bilirubin in prepared blood samples.
40–45 μL Sample Volume
Only a small capillary blood sample is required, supporting testing where sample volume is limited.
Bi-Chromatic Photometer
The optical system uses 450 nm and 578 nm filters for bilirubin measurement according to the supplied configuration.
Approx. 10-Second Measurement
After proper sample preparation and capillary placement, the measurement result can be obtained in approximately 10 seconds.
Built-In Thermal Printer
An integrated 58 mm thermal printer allows test results to be printed directly at the instrument.
LCD Display
A 16 × 2 backlit LCD provides straightforward display of instrument information and test results.
RS232 & USB Connectivity
Standard RS232 and USB interfaces are available for external data connection according to the system configuration.
Compact Benchtop Design
With dimensions of approximately 250 × 190 × 85 mm and a net weight of about 2 kg, the system is suitable for laboratories and clinical departments with limited workspace.
Clinical Applications
The UMALZ027 is intended for blood-based total bilirubin measurement in clinical environments.
- Clinical laboratory bilirubin testing.
- Neonatal and newborn bilirubin assessment using blood samples.
- Hospital laboratory testing.
- Pediatric laboratory workflows.
- Selected liver-function related bilirubin measurement.
- Diagnostic centers and clinical testing facilities.
Measurement Principle
The system uses direct photometry. Blood is collected into a disposable capillary and prepared before measurement so that the optical system can evaluate the sample and determine total bilirubin concentration.
Proper capillary filling, sample preparation and positioning are important for reliable measurement. The supplied capillary is designed for approximately 60 μL total capacity, with the test sample typically occupying about two-thirds to three-quarters of the capillary volume.

Standard Accessories
The following items are commonly supplied with this bilirubin meter platform. Final package contents should be confirmed before quotation.
- Main bilirubin meter.
- Power adapter.
- User manual.
- Thermal printer paper.
- RS232 cable.
- Dust cover.
- Disposable capillaries.
- Seal plate / related measurement accessory according to configuration.
Blood Sample Workflow
Blood is collected using a compatible disposable capillary. The sample is prepared according to the operating procedure before the capillary is inserted into the measuring well.
Because this is a blood-based photometric bilirubin meter, correct capillary filling, sample separation and insertion position are important. It should not be confused with a handheld transcutaneous bilirubin meter that estimates bilirubin through the skin.
